May is National Osteoporosis Awareness Month

The National Osteoporosis Foundation is working hard to bring awareness to this serious disease that affects over 10 million Americans nationwide. But what is osteoporosis, and what can you do to prevent it?

What is it?Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens your bones, causing them to break from minor falls or from simple actions like accidentally bumping into furniture. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, half of all women over the age of 50 and one in four men will break a bone because of osteoporosis. Breaks are most likely to occur in the hip, spine and wrist, and can cause severe pain at the site of the break that may not go away. The disease can also cause you to lose height or affect your posture, causing you to become stooped. In addition, osteoporosis can make it difficult to get around and do activities you enjoy, which can drastically decrease your quality of life.
How do I know if I have it?Osteoporosis is known in the medical world as the “silent disease,” because you can’t feel your bones becoming weaker until they break. Don’t wait until you break a bone or experience height loss; it’s best to talk to your doctor now about screening for potential osteoporosis risk factors.
Is there anything I can do?Regardless of your age, there are steps you can take to protect your bone health, now and in the future…
Get enough Calcium and Vitamin DDid you know that 99% of the calcium in our bodies is found in our bones and teeth? Our bodies are not able to produce new calcium, so it’s important to consume calcium-rich foods every day. Not sure which foods are rich in calcium and which aren’t? Here’s a helpful list of calcium-rich foods to get you started.
You should also talk to your doctor to see if you are getting a sufficient amount from food, or if you need to incorporate a calcium supplement into your diet. When selecting a supplement, look for one that contains vitamin D (which your body needs in order to absorb calcium).
Exercise regularlyYou must exercise regularly if you want to build and maintain your bone density. The two types of exercises that are recommended to ensure bone health are weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises. Weight-bearing exercises include jogging, hiking, high or low impact aerobics, and using cardio machines like an elliptical or stationary bike. Muscle-strengthening exercises include lifting weights, using weight machines, performing strength exercises with exercise bands or even lifting your own body weight. Incorporate a combination of both types into your weekly exercise routine and you’ll be well on your way to having healthy, strong bones! However, keep in mind that it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider before starting an exercise routine so that they may recommend the right type of exercise for you.
Limit alcohol and caffeine intakeDrinking too much alcohol can lead to bone loss, so moderation – like with anything else- is the key. The National Osteoporosis Foundation suggests limiting consumption of alcoholic drinks to no more than 2-3 per day.
Caffeinated drinks can also negatively affect bone health. Drinking more than three cups of coffee every day, for example, may interfere with calcium absorption and cause bone loss. Choose caffeinated beverages like tea, coffee, and soft drinks wisely, or eliminate them all together if possible.
These are some helpful tips to get you started on the road to bone health, but it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about your risk factors for the disease and what you can do to prevent it.
Now it’s your turn: How are you helping to raise awareness about this “silent disease” this month? Tell us in the comments below!

Getting Over Your Fear of Public Speaking

If you suffer from a bit of stage fright in front of a group, read on for tips on overcoming your nerves and speaking with authority:
Be Prepared
If you’re the type to “just wing it” on most occasions and do well: congratulations. I am very jealous. Though you may be able to cruise through meetings, classes, or events with little prep, speaking in front of a crowd is a whole new arena, especially if you’re already nervous. A little preparation has the power to go a long way. Before your speaking engagement, make an outline of what you want to say. How you structure your outline is really up to you. You can write it word for word (like a speech) or make bullet points of main ideas to discuss.
I find that when I get up to speak to a crowd, highlighting certain parts of my outline with a pink highlighter helps me get back on track if I begin to lose my place. If you’re able to use a visual aid (like a PowerPoint), it can also help you from stumbling over your words. Follow the slides to help your presentation progress, but be careful not to read straight off of them! That’s boring for the audience.
Share Something You Care About
Part of the reason you may be struggling with public speaking is because you’re talking about a topic you think will bore your audience (thus making you boring) or because you’re not excited about sharing your material. If you speak on a topic you love, chances are your audience will see your passion and they’ll love it, too! Find ways to make your presentations exciting and relatable. Not familiar with Motives® Cosmetics? Invite a business partner to do that part of the presentation. Talk about what you feel comfortable with and you’re sure to have an easier time getting through your presentation.
Understand You’re Not Perfect
Are you a perfectionist who’s afraid of flubbing up in front of a crowd of people? Get over it! Mistakes can and will happen and your best bet is to anticipate them so they don’t destroy your presentation later on. If you say something wrong or skip over a line in your presentation, slow down, correct yourself, and move on. It happens to the best of us. Anyone remember recently on The Voice when popular singer Usher called Nashville a state? That’s quite a serious flub, but he smiled, laughed, and took it in stride.
Just Do It
I’ve found that the most effective way to get over your fear of public speaking is to just do it. What’s the worst that could happen? Maybe you’ll stutter. Maybe you’ll turn red in the face (I know I do!). Chances are, someone in the audience knows just how you feel. Don’t be afraid of judgment… be afraid of not trying. The more times you speaking in front of an audience, the more comfortable you’ll become.
Public speaking may never top your list of favorite things to do, but if you take the time to really think about your presentation then go for it, you’ll meet with nothing but success.

Following People on Facebook

If you use Facebook, you know what it means to send and accept a Friend request. But do you know what it means to follow someone on Facebook? If you’re unfamiliar with this term and want to know more, read on!

Is following someone on Facebook the same as friending them?Following someone on Facebook is not the same as being friends with them. Why? Well to start, you don’t have to send them a request to follow them; once you click “follow”, all of their public updates will start showing up in your news feed. While they may choose to follow you back, doing so is not required in order for you to follow them.
What are public updates? These are photos, statuses, and any other content you to post to your timeline so that everyone (i.e. the public, which includes people you are not friends with) can see it.This includes your Facebook followers. Keep reading to learn how to post a public update!
Why would I want people I am not friends with to follow me and vice versa? To connect with more people, sell more products, and increase your chances of being contacted by potential prospects, of course! If you choose to post public updates and allow people to subscribe to you, you must be selective about what you post. I wouldn’t suggest posting anything too personal, i.e. personal information (duh), photos from your family reunion, or info about your kid losing his first tooth. Instead, keep your public posts strictly business-related. For example, photos of your favorite Market America products, an inspiring quote that motivates you to build your business, or a photo of you holding your extra tickets to the 2013 International Convention. This makes it so when people who aren’t connected to you view your public profile, they can get a better idea of who you are, what you do, and have enough information about both if they want to reach out to you.
How do I set my profile so that others can follow me?Click “Settings” (the gear icon on the navigation bar at the top of your profile) and select “Account Settings” (see below). In your account settings, select “Followers”.
In your Follower settings, select the check box next to “Turn on Follow”.
Voila! You now have changed your settings so that people can follow you!
It should also be noted that once you turn on this setting, someone who sends you a friend request that you do not accept (by clicking the “Not Now” option on the request) automatically moves them to your list of followers.
How do I post a public update? There are two ways to do this: the first is to change the audience setting of your post before you post it on your timeline. For example, let’s say you just finished crafting an incredibly witty/funny/awe-inspiring status update that you want to post to your timeline as public. Before you click the “Post” button, click the dropdown menu that resides directly to the left of it.
Select “Public”, click “Post”, and you’re done!
The second way you can post a public update is by changing the audience of a post that has already been posted. To do this, click on the icon next to your name on your post, then select from the drop-down menu the audience you would like to set your post to. Your choices are Public, Friends, Friends except Acquaintances, Only Me, and Custom, but right now let’s just worry about Public and Friends.
Understanding how to switch back and forth between audiences on a post that has already been posted is very useful! Why? Well, maybe you posted something as public you would rather have as private so only your friends can see it, or posted something only your friends can see that you would like your followers to see, too. You have the freedom to change the settings at any time.
How can I check to see how many people are following me?To see who is following you, click on your Facebook profile (not your news feed), and scroll down to your “About” section right below your profile photo on the left. At the very bottom of your About section, you will see your follower count (see below).
What questions do you have about following people on Facebook? Post your questions and comments in the section below!

Financial Feature: Retirement Becoming the Unattainable Goal

Trivia time: define the ‘American Dream.’ In a past life, the right answer would be something along the lines of the privilege of combining hard work and perseverance to create a life for yourself, a family, and assets for next generations, earning you the chance to spend your final years in complete leisure. Today, the American Dream is defined simply: a dream.

As much as we hate to face the music, the numbers do not lie. Some of us will be lucky to live as long as we need to work to earn sufficient retirement funds. In an article featured on Yahoo! Finance, data outlines a bleak future for today and the next generation’s workers.
New data show that powerful financial and demographic forces are combining to squeeze individuals and companies that are trying to save for the future and make their money last. Here’s some harrowing statistics:
  • 57% of U.S. workers surveyed reported less than $25,000 in total household savings and investments (excluding homes) – Employee Benefit Research Institute. Only 49% reported having so little money saved in 2008.
  • 28% of Americans, higher than ever previously reported, lack any confidence they will have enough money to retire comfortably
  • Rising life expectancies could add as much as $97 billion to corporate pension liabilities in coming years, an increase of up to 5%. – Society of Actuaries
  • The percentage of workers who have saved for retirement, once 75% in 2009, not a startling 66% – Employee Benefit Research Institute survey.
  • Only about half of the workers and retirees surveyed thought $2,000 if an unexpected need were to arise in the next month.
So, what are we working for? All that is left to be attained is survival. Americans now earn enough money to barely make their house and insurance payments while they continue to rack in debt. At what point did the American Dream, once a promise, become a life sentence?
Wherever that point can be found, we found the fork in the road. The UnFranchise® system changes the way you earn and save money, unveiling the path to a different future that starts today.
Maybe your business is still building and you look around and wonder when the miracle will ever happen. Think about how you once fully committed to a life-time plan without any legitimate ending. Scratch that and picture a few more years until financial freedom.

Building Your Business in Your Community

Whether you’re new to the business or a seasoned UnFranchise® Owner, you know firsthand that the best place to build your business is right in your community! But if you’ve been coming up short on leads and feel like you’re hitting brick wall when searching for new prospects, here’s some tips for shaking up your strategy to help you break through a plateau.

Networking (in person!) is the name of the game
Are you consistently attending networking events in your area? If your answer is no, then it’s time to start. Not sure where to find out about these events? Call your local chamber of commerce and ask if they have any upcoming (free) networking events. Search for local small-business events online. Call your friends who are active in the community and ask them if they know about any upcoming events. These events are not going to find you; you must find them.Get creative, and soon enough you will discover that many networking events have been right under your nose the entire time!
Link up with prospects and potential customers on LinkedIn!
LinkedIn is an amazing resource that you can’t afford to miss! And I’m not just talking about keeping your profile up to date; I’m talking about joining LinkedIn groups created specifically for business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals in your area, participating in discussions, adding value to your online community, and reaching out to other users when the time is right. If you’re active in these groups, people WILL remember you. And when people remember you, you’re the first one they think of when they need something – whether it’s a product or a business opportunity.
Social searching
You’ve heard us say it before, but I’m going to say it again: if you’re not doing some sort of social searching by now, you’re missing out on a lot. For example, use Twitter to search for people in your area who talk about wanting a new job. If you have Graph Search on Facebook, search for “friends of friends who live in (my town) and are entrepreneurs”. Keep a record of all the people you find in an excel spread sheet and include their name, Twitter handle or Facebook profile link, and why you chose to include them in your list (this will help you jog your memory later). Once you have a list of 20-30 names put together, send each person on your list a personalized message introducing yourself.
Now we want to hear from you: share with us some of your favorite tips and tricks for building your business in your community!

Five Apps for Students

Few things do we appreciate more than when people chase their dreams and accomplish their goals. For some of you, that may mean getting a degree in a specific area or continuing your education. Education is both rewarding and challenging, but the challenging aspect should mold you into a better person, not hinder your progress. Whether you just registered for next semester, are preparing for summer courses, or your children just received their acceptance letters, here are our best recommended apps for students to make life easier!

MyHomework: MyHomework is an virtual bulletin board that allows students to split up their classes and post their tasks and schedule. Accessible from the web, smartphones, and tablets, MyHomework acts as a school-specific agenda. With tabs for classes, teachers, assignments, and due dates, it is a pocket-sized, fully mobile stop for everything they need to know as they move throughout the days in the semester.
(via)
Dictionary.com: This is a standard must-have for any student. Whatever they are studying, they will read, come across words they do not know, write, and need to use words they are not familiar with. In the age where nearly every essential fits in our back pocket or clutch purse, no one has space to carry a dictionary. Dictionary.com is a free mobile app providing full access to a dictionary and thesaurus. With quick and easy access, this app is a paper saver! (Literally!) This app is available for free in both the Apple and Play Stores.

Bamboo Paper: Perfect for tablets, but available on smartphones as well, Bamboo Paper creates virtual notebooks. From sketch books to college ruled, Bamboo Paper cuts the bulk notebooks, cost of paper, and risk of illegible handwriting by consolidating everything into an organizational virtual destination. The student can create a notebook for each subject and access it in class or on the go.
DropBox: Ask any student who pressed the wrong key on page 27 of their 28 page paper, or any student who turned in their paper late because their hard drive crashed. Student Survival Rule #1: BACK UP! DropBox allows you to save and store all of your documents, photos, and media, as well as share them with others. Perfect for instructors, group projects, and remote access, everything saved in DropBox is safe as long as you need it! This app is available for free in both the Apple and Play store.
iFormulas: Whether you’re number savvy or mathematically challenged, iFormulas needs a spot on your iPhone. iFormulas provides a database of every math formula a student may need to help them with their homework. We doubt that professors will allow its use during exams, but it provides a neatly organized database with easy access while you learn! This app is available for free for iPhones.

Do you have a go-to app you would add to the list? Tell us in the comments below!

Who Uses Social Media?

Here’s a tricky question: do you know who uses social media? If you answered, “I do!” you’re at least on the right track! But what I’m talking about is the demographic breakdown of who uses social media and which social media network they use the most.

Whether you’re an avid social media user or think that it’s a “waste of time because no one I know is on it,” this social media infographic created by the Pew Research Center and Docstoc is a worth a look:
A little overwhelming, isn’t it? Let’s break it down:
GenderYep, you guessed it: women are more likely to use social media than men. But that doesn’t mean that men aren’t using social media! In fact, 62% of men surveyed reported they are active social media users.
AgeWhile it’s true that the majority of 18-29 year-olds use social media the most, people in the 20-49 and 50-64 age brackets follow at a close second and third, respectively. Next time you find yourself saying “I don’t use social media because none of my friends or customers are on it!” think about these stats.
Education levelEven though Facebook was only available to college students at first, this infographic shows us that education level is not a determinant factor when it comes to social media use. Woo hoo!
Population densityWhile 70% of urban-dwellers are on social media, only 61% of people living in rural areas are using social media. The publishers of this infographic attributed this to the fact that individuals living in urban areas are more accustom to connectivity of large-city life and thus gravitate to social networks.
RaceSocial media doesn’t discriminate! This infographic shows us that Hispanics are more likely to use social media, but African-Americans and Caucasians are a close second and third, respectively.
Household incomeWhile 72% of lower-income households reported that they are active on social media, high-income households are only 6 percentage points behind them.
And the most popular social media network is…Facebook!A whopping 67% of adults are actively posting, sharing, and commenting on Facebook, and we hope you are, too! LinkedIn and Twitter follow in second and third place, but are growing in leaps and bounds every day. If you’re not on these top three social networks, what are you waiting for? Hop on the social media train before you get left in the dust!
Were you surprised by any of these social media stats? Tell us in the comments below!
