Four Tips to get a Conversation Going

As a Market America UnFranchise® Owner, I am desired to share our business with the world! You can find contacts, potential customers and business partners almost anywhere you go, but finding creative ways to get the conversation flowing is sometimes  a challenge. Do you follow the three foot rule, sharing the business with everyone in close proximity to you? The idea may seem daunting, but here are some tips for making it easier:
 


Let Them Talk
While you may be excited to jump straight into the business and share all of our wonderful products with a new acquaintance, make sure you allow them the time to talk first. Learning a little bit about someone is definitely an advantage that you can use later, as you relate our business to their specific strengths and weaknesses.

Be Prepared
Once you’ve had the opportunity to mention Market America to someone, they’re going to ask you to explain who we are and what you do. Seasoned business owners have a set dialog that can explain our business in under two minutes! If someone asks you tomorrow, “What is Market America,” are you prepared to explain?

FORM
The FORM method is a great way to direct a conversation with a new prospect. It’s easy!
F- Talk about Family
O- Talk about Occupation
R- Talk about what they do for Recreation
M- Talk about Money
This allows you to control the conversation so that it doesn’t jump into business too quickly.

Follow Up
It’s great to hand out business cards to new contacts, but make sure that you get their contact information as well. This allows you to follow up 24-48 hours later to discuss meeting. There’s never an excuse not to follow up, so do it every time!

Apple or Android: Who is Winning the Mobile War?

Last month, Apple announced the iPhone 5, a predicted game changer in mobile technology. While some applauded Apple’s latest efforts, others believed that they fell short. Meanwhile, the Android crowd has been anxiously waiting for the release of Jelly Bean.  Though choosing your phone is a matter of personal preference, here are our thoughts on iOS and Android:
 
 

Apps
iOS is a great choice for those who want to play games on their phone, as the App Store has the largest library of games available. When considering non-entertainment apps, both the App Store and Google Play offer great choices. While the App Store has a broader offering, apps bought for Android can interact a bit more freely with your phone. Google Play runs efficiently on Android devices, while the App Store can be a bit clunky on older iPhone models.

Maps
Apple has gotten a lot of flak lately for their ill-designed Maps feature on iOS 6. Put simply: it wasn’t great before and it simply hasn’t gotten better. Google Maps for Android is much more accurate and easier to use. I’m an Android user-turned Apple user and the one thing that I miss about my old phone is the navigation capabilities. Apple has issued an official apology for the latest rendering of Maps, so we’ll see if they’re able to step up their game by the time the next update is released.

Customization & Intuitiveness
Both iOS and Android have great user interfaces, though it would certainly be an adjustment to switch from one to another. If you’re looking for customization on your home screen or anywhere else, Android has the clear advantage. You aren’t able to customize much on an iPhone without jailbreaking it. However, because iOS is highly intuitive, straight-forward and doesn’t allow for customization, it has a much easier learning curve.

Updates
While Android’s Google Maps beats iOS Maps by a landslide, iOS returns with a vengeance when it comes to updates. When iOS 6 was released a couple of weeks ago, it was immediately available to all iPhone users. How long will it take for all Android users to have Jelly Bean on their phones when some of them still don’t have Ice Cream Sandwich? This conversation is going to make me hungry!

Though many more comparisons can be drawn between iOS and Android, it’s best to leave the discussion here. Both iOS and Android are great operating systems, and Windows is also becoming a growing force in the mobile marketplace. One may be more useful to a certain demographic than the other, but they are all strong contenders in the mobile market.

Market America’s Vice President of Mobile and Social Products, Steve Ashley, spoke to a group of industry experts last week at the Cross-Channel Retail Executive Summit – held by RIS News in San Antonio, TX. SHOP Mobile App Ranked in Internet Retailer’s 2013 Mobile 400 Guide

The SHOP.COM mobile app has met with success across the board since its release. A resourceful tool for Independent Shop Consultants and consumers alike, this app has been ranked in Internet Retailer’s Mobile 400 Guide for the second year in a row. For 2013, the SHOP Mobile app ranks at 55, a massive 150+ spots up from the 2012 guide. 
 


To achieve the rankings, Internet Retailer nabbed a third party team to assess the performance of each mobile app. SHOP.COM earned an “excellent” rating.

Five Tips to Dress Professionally this Fall

Cooler autumn weather usually means choosing clothes designed to keep you warm. It’s nice to get cozy on a cool fall evening, but there are plenty of occasions when an entrepreneur wants – and needs – to look professional. Dressing for success doesn’t have to mean giving up comfort; keeping a few simple tips in mind can ensure you’re warm, comfortable and chic all autumn long.

Five Time-Saving Tips for Busy Entrepreneurs

Late summer and fall are busy times of the year. There are back-to-school routines and hectic work schedules that demand time and attention.  Working longer in-office hours and dealing with at-home pressures can make it challenging to devote time to your own business. However, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you make the most of every day.
 
1. Be prepared for the next day. Lay out work clothes and make lunches the night before. This will make mornings less hectic, reducing stress for the rest of the day.  

2. Double your recipes. Making meals is rewarding and often healthy, but usually time consuming. When you’re taking the time to put together good food for you and your family, make sure to prepare extra servings, specifically to use on another day. Leftovers are schedule-friendly meals that will help you have more time to devote to your business on another day. 

3. Have a plan. When it’s time to work on your business, know what you’re going to accomplish. A list of top priorities will ensure that you get the essentials done every day. 

4. Leave your business at home. Don’t let the day job and your business cross over – focus on each job, one at a time. You’ll get more done in the office, which will help you avoid more late-night work days. If you need to check in on a customer or do some maintenance on your business, wait until lunch or a time when you can give it your full attention. 

5. Use technology. Smartphones, tablets, mobile apps and social media have made it easier than ever to build your business on-the-go. Take advantage of these tools. If you’re riding home in a carpool, for example, maximize your time by engaging with potential customers on Facebook.
